Working From Home: Should I Build a Garden Office?

Working From Home: Should I Build a Garden Office?

Thanks to COVID-19, over the last few months, a great deal of the global population have been forced to work from home. While the circumstances which brought about this change have been difficult at best and harrowing at worst, the change to working from home has been surprisingly smooth for most. Many studies have pointed towards a drop in general anxiety amongst home office workers, and some companies, such as Twitter, have decided to let their staff work from home indefinitely.Woman Working From Home Garden

Why a garden office?

While working from home has its benefits, it also has its drawbacks. That is, working and relaxing in the same space can have a profound effect on us mentally, making it difficult for our brains to separate the two states. For example, if you’re working on your laptop in the living room and put it down to watch some TV at the end of the day, you may find it difficult to properly switch off.

This is where your garden office comes in. Not only does your garden office give you somewhere that’s physically distinct from the home in which you relax, it also allows you to spend more time in your garden and appreciate it properly. With this setup, you truly get the best of both worlds.

Still need convincing? Well, here are a few more things you might want to consider:

Better lighting

We should all get more sunlight. Vitamin D can work wonders for our bones and immune system, and yet barely any of us get their recommended daily intake. Sunlight can also help with our sleep cycle; if we spend enough time in the sun during the day, our brains know to switch off when the sun goes down.

Thanks to the amount of natural light you will get in a purpose-built garden office, you can guarantee yourself a healthy working environment. And while we’re on the subject, the natural sights and smells of our garden will only serve to relax us further, something that will help boost both mood and productivity.

Fewer distractions

Whether it’s kids, dogs or our favourite hobbies, our homes are full of little distractions that can really make getting into the swing of work difficult. Luckily, with a garden office, you can take yourself away from those distractions and get some meaningful work done, secure in the knowledge that those things are waiting for you, not far away, when you clock off.

Add value to your home

You might not be thinking about selling your home now, but the chances are you will at some point. With this in mind, it makes sense to not just see your garden office as a money sink, but as an investment. That is, just like any home extension, a garden office will add value to your property. Many buyers value garden rooms greatly, whether they’re looking for an office themselves or simply want to find a respectable place to house elderly relatives, which is why, in the long term, a garden office could truly pay for itself.

Gardenscapes have just finished a 5 month project rebuilding part of the garden and replacing the drive. The hard and soft landscape works were comple...ted to a very high standard. Neal and Ainsley were a pleasure to work with and we would be happy to recommend Gardenscapes.

Gardenscapes installed steel edging to all the lawns in our garden. The work was carried out precisely as promised, to the highest standard and looks...great. The best aspect was the friendly service that we received - it was a pleasure to have Neal and Ainsley on site and nothing was too much trouble. I have no hesitation in recommending them for any garden project.

Having sourced several quotes for a complete garden overhaul, we commissioned Gardenscapes upon meeting Neal and Ainsley - who listened to our brief, well as advised appropriately. They reviewed our requirements and discussed what would work best based on their experience and expertise. This is something we wanted in a landscape specialist: rather than just doing what the client wants. We have a mossy and boggy area of the garden thanks to the constant shade of a huge oak and we welcomed their gentle and expert advice on what would - and wouldn't - work in this section of the garden. The works consisted of removing existing paving and decking, garden levelling, providing astroturf samples at different price points as well as paving options and subsequent installations as well as a new tiered level. The Gardenscapes team were consultative throughout and extremely polite, respectful and tidy. they turned up early, worked hard all day and their communication from start to finish was superb and professional. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. We are thoroughly pleased with their work, value for money, and results.

In 2016 Neal’s Team installed a shed in out garden. The location beside the house was unstable so the shed was placed on top of a platform creat...ed by Neal and his team. In 2018 the team built a sun deck area in a different part of the garden. This too has successful.

Where do I begin? Neal was the only guy to actually ask me what I wanted in my garden rather than telling me what I should have. That greatly impresse...d me and I was not disappointed in his work or his workforce. He completely relandscaped my back garden including a pond. Highly recommend this company.
